Note: this is for reference purposes only since course is only available in my geographic area.

Course Description: This course starts with the conception of ideas for movies and TV shows and takes us through the entire process, from birth to opening night, with a strong emphasis on writing. One of the major aims here will be to "demystify" the entire process and, when necessary, to throw out the rules especially ones that insist, "there is only one way to do it." This will be a personal, visceral, hands on experience that gets down to the bottom line which is how to write scripts and what else you'll need to know.
Note: help available for works in progress. One or two will be used for class discussion. (A valuable opportunity, handled gently. Material used will be decided on a first come basis).
Essential Objectives:
At the end of this course students should be able to:
- Recognize the whisper of a good idea and have the ability to grow and nurture it.
- Understand the fundamentals of writing a script (emphasis on screenplays - i.e.: structure, "arc-ing," character development, dialogue, subplots, theme (premise) etc.).
- Have a good sense of the showbiz playing field which will empower student and lessen the intimidation of unfamiliarity.
- Have tools to remove and/or redirect writer's block, perfectionism and related obstacles and fears.
- Develop a creative perspective and derive courage from unity with others.
- Be ready and eager to proceed/continue with creative work.
Examples of course content:
- Examine a first draft TV script and then study the produced show. We will use actual professional materials from Hollywood.
- Brainstorm and argue story points.
- Get down to the "nitty-gritty" as it pertains to story structure, character creation and dialogue.
- "Arc" out stories.
- Play at casting. Also, screen actual professional auditions. We will debate who deserves to get the part and then we'll find out who got it.
- Learn to "pitch".
- Writers block and other occupational hazards will be examined via Julia Cameron's, The Artist's Way.
- The anatomy of a pilot. We will screen a successful network pilot (developed by instructor) and examine all of its eclectic elements. We will "relive" the experience, the strategies, the problems, the disasters, the luck encountered -- all of the things that go on in this mercurial world.
- Films will be studied, analyzed and evaluated.
- Included in this class will be telephone interviews with Hollywood professionals.
